Wing Tattoos
Taking Flight: Wing Tattoos
I
believe I can fly, I believe I can touch the sky,
Think about it every night and day, Spread my wings and fly
away…
If you have dreams of soaring high in the skies, the wing
tattoo is for you. Wing tattoos can have a wide range of
meanings for those who wear them. Choosing to wear such a bold
and usually large tattoo often means that the wearer is marking
a moment of clear change in their lives and the moment at which
that change made them feel so strongly. Wing tattoos typically
stand for strength and freedom.
Angel Wings
This type of wing is most commonly a black lined pair of
uncolored wings on the back and shoulder blades of the wearer
as with the wings of angels in religious tales. Angel wing
tattoos tend to have spiritual, protective and guiding purposes
for the wearer. They may also stand as a symbol of
enlightenment or inspiration in their life. The wings of an
angel represent the protection and guidance of those iconic
religious figures and for some represent a connection to their
own guardian angel.
Wings of Love
Wings of love represent a lost loved one. This
form of tattoo represents that loved ones journey into the
afterlife, from the wings that carry the soul, to the
afterlife, to the release that afterlife gives from life and
the bonds of the human body.
Wings as Symbols of Freedom
This form of the wing tattoo is bound in the clear
symbolism of wings as a means of gaining freedom. Often they
are intended to serve as a reminder of the wearer’s own power
to escape and control their own destiny. Usually these wings
are those of birds or angels.
Butterfly Wings
Butterfly wings represent fragility and the feminine side of
human nature. Once butterflies were believed to be bearers of
the human soul and therefore those who wear them are often
embodying the fragile and imperceptible nature of the soul. It
is also an indication of people who feel that they are easily
touched and hurt by the outside world both physically,
emotionally, mentally and morally. Butterflies are also tied in
with the cycle of life because they have such clear a life
cycle themselves.
Battle-Worn Wings
Battle-worn wings can be tattered with the
feathers loose or even broken in their angel form or sometimes
they may also be bloody or even skeletal. These wings represent
the pain and suffering of life or the many battles the wearer
has faced on their way to this point in their life and so a
memento from that journey.
The many forms of wings also include things depictions of
mythical creatures, birds and even cyber wings like those that
might be worn by a robot. While there are several types of
wings and each has its own unique meaning for the wearer one
things seems clear: We are the pilots of our destiny and
ultimately it is our own movements and our own choices that
carry us where we go in life. While we may not have these wings
in actual reality, we do have the power to find our own freedom
and through it, the power to steer our own destiny.
